Many schools prepare a list of back-to-school items for the parents to purchase for their children. But, smartphones and laptops? Since when are these required items? Ah, not required by the schools, but many parents apparently purchase these for their kids in attempt to raise their self-esteem. A British studied revealed more than 25% of parents felt pressured to buy their child a smartphone so he/she would “fit in” at school.
Culture has become increasingly difficult (& expensive!) to keep up with. For parents, many are spending close to $500 on gadgets, according to this study. This doesn’t even include clothing to accommodate your child’s latest growth spurt or other school supplies required by the school. For students, having the “right” clothing or shoes is no longer enough; popularity and “fitting in” is now measured by technological gadgets? How crazy!
